Public Health Emergency Preparedness

The role of public health is to prepare for, promote, protect, and improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Disasters greatly disrupt and hinder the health and well-being of communities and systems. Key activities of PHEP, such as planning, organizing, equipping, training, and exercising, minimize the short and long-term effects of a disaster, originating from natural, technological, or human causes.

PHEP services are not strictly for health departments, but can benefit government at all levels, private sector businesses, and non-profit organizations as the goal is to provide a system or group with the knowledge and tools needed before a disaster occurs. As a means to carry out PHEP, there are numerous PHEP standards of practices to follow:

How EPS can help

The fields of public health and emergency management have rapidly merged over the past few decades. The goals of each sector are inherently the same: reduce the vulnerabilities of health and social systems in an equitable fashion. To reach this goal, it is vital to foster a culture of preparedness by ensuring a capable, strong workforce, strengthening cross-sector partnerships, and exercising, training, and assessing emergency response plans. With our experience building PHEP programs, conducting CDC Operational Readiness Reviews (ORR), and implementing continuous improvement practices from various exercises or assessments, EPS is equipped to help you plan for and prepare for all types of disasters.
